Local Excitement!!

New Grill Room

by Stella Lewis
It has been a very mild November and the Nissaki was gently sleeping its way through the winter when suddenly there was great excitement! Just when we thought everything had closed down for the winter, a new grill room opened. The local impact of this is difficult to describe and is best experienced.
'Roumeli' is now the gathering place of the locals who sit there all day drinking coffee, ouzo and nibbling on a snack.

A couple of Sundays ago Nathan was working in the office and at 6pm, not having eaten all day, decided to give Roumeli's a try. Walking into the dining area through a cloud of cigarette smoke he was greeted by the owner and the local Pappas, amongst others.

Being the generous soul that he is, and knowing everyone in there, while he waited for his food, Nathan decided to buy a round of drinks. Now Greek etiquette requires that this is reciprocated and in no time at all round after round appeared on his table from each person in there!

Thank goodness the generous portions of souvlaki, chips and salad arrived quickly or he would've had to spend the night there.
Later, commenting on the amount of cigarette smoke in the place the owner turned to his clients and said 'Oh yes, remember that after the new year you won't be able to smoke in here at all.'

One local piped up,'Well that's OK in the summer, but we'll still have to smoke inside in the winter'!! I don't think the Greeks have quite got the point of a smoking ban, do you?!!
Since this episode, we have all enjoyed impromptu lunches and take-aways from 'Roumeli'. The owners, Vangelis and Anna-Marie, are extremely hospitable and there is always a special 'dish of the day' on the menu which makes it a little more interesting than the usual grilled meat only. As it is within easy walking distance of the Agni Travel office, we're also getting fit when we go out for lunch!

Corfu Highstreet Adds British Flavour!

Corfu Highstreet Adds British Flavour!, December 2008, Newsletters, Agni Travel

Talking of excitement, the Brits amongst us are over the moon because M&S have opened a (very small) Food Hall in their store in Corfu Town! With rhubarb crumbles, Bramley apple pies, chocolate puddings to name just a few they are soon going to sell out!
It's in the section where the men's underwear used to be*, next to the till, and is well stocked with dried goods, tins, a good selection of wine and all sorts of frozen goodies at reasonable prices too!
*PS Don't be alarmed - Menswear is now upstairs!

It may not sound much to those who have a local M&S Food Hall but for us ex-pats Christmas came early this year!!!

Lefkada

At the beginning of October we visited Lefkada (or Lefkas as it is generally known) to finalise the contracts for 7 new villas there. For those who don't know where Lefkada is, it's a very small island between Paxos and Kefalonia.
Joined to the mainland by a 'floating' bridge the island has a varied landscape with long sandy beaches in the north and pebbly bays and coves in the south. Our properties are situated in Tsoukalades and Agios Ioannis in the north, Agios Nikitas on the West coast and Sivota in the south. Getting to Lefkada couldn't be easier with Sunday flights from both London Gatwick and Manchester followed by a half-hour car journey thereafter.
For a twin-centre holiday you might like to consider one week in Lefkada followed by a week on Corfu (or Paxos). Hourly ferries from Corfu take you to Igoumenitsa and from there it is only 2 hours to Lefkada Town.

Philoxena Travel Show - Thessalonica

In addition to seeking out new destinations and villas for 2009, we also visited the Philoxenia Travel Show in Thessalonica last month. Our aim was to meet other travel professionals and to forge links with airline and ferry companies in order to offer our clients alternative means of travel at the very best price.
We came home with our pockets full of business cards and we are now following them all up. Although we didn't see much of it, Thessalonica is an ancient city with a 'young' heart, having a university and several colleges. The new metro is currently being constructed which makes getting around a little difficult but when it is finished will certainly lighten the city traffic.
Now that the new road between Thessalonica and Igoumenitsa is nearly finished, the journey took us just over 4 hours (plus a stop for lunch). Where the road is finished we flew along, barely seeing another vehicle although where we had to return to the old road for a few kilometres it was more tedious driving around hairpin bends and following convoys of lorries. The road is scheduled to be finished in the next couple of years and each new stage will make the journey even shorter.

We were urged not to return home without visiting a certain cake shop for the famous Trigopatamos cakes, which we did - filling the boot of the car with 7 boxes!!!
