Christmas Already

Christmas Already, December 2007, Newsletters, Agni Travel

(by Nathan Pascoe, Agni Travel)
Last week, I was driving home from the Agni office and while negotiating the 'Kendroma' village bend (no easy feat for those who know it as a 460 degree bend!) when I was distracted by twinkling lights! In a moment of confusion, while changing down into 2nd gear and turning the steering wheel too many times, plus avoiding Alex who was walking across the road to the Kafenion, I suddenly realized that Christmas will soon be here!

Call me a 'Yerolathas' (the Greek equivalent of Ebeneezer), but this does seem to be the earliest that Christmas has started for us in Greece. When I first moved to Greece, locals would only start putting up the decorations during Christmas week!!

Of course the office staff have already started to decorate the beach!

Winter Warmers

December has just clocked in and before we know it Christmas will be here again!
Goodness, where did the year go?? And what will the new one bring?? Perhaps one of our fabulous new villa properties in captivating Kefalonia (see further details below)?
Maybe your favourite annual retreat in Corfu or even that one you thought of trying in Paxos last year but never got round to?
It's certainly all food for thought .. and whilst on the subject of food...

Winter Warmers, December 2007, Newsletters, Agni Travel

Anyone visiting the Agni Travel offices lately would be forgiven for initially thinking they had wandered into a family taverna or zaharoplasteion (cake shop) by mistake...
From mid-morning yesterday the delicious smell of warm, home-made bougatsa (almond custard slices in filo pastry sprinkled with icing sugar and cinnamon) wafted its way from the kitchen through the open offices. It was Maria's nameday (a celebration of the saint of the same name) and Maria enjoys cooking....we in turn enjoy Maria's cooking....(works quite well really...). She had prepared it at home for us as a treat and brought it in to warm - a second slice was required mid afternoon to confirm it really was as good as we first thought!

Gone are the bowls of summery salads and light lunches, it is now the time for winter warmers and more solid sustenance. During the few odd stolen moments between Nathan's whip cracks (only kidding!) the girls - English Stella and Rachel, and Corfiots Maria and Fotini - indulge in 'food talk', exchanging recipes and bringing in samples of the tried-and-tested ones to share.
The boys' involvement up to this point is negligible (let's face it, even 3-Michelin-star chef Marco Pierre White recently admitted that women make better cooks...) but is suddenly heightened, funnily enough, around 1pm when the time comes for sampling the plat du jour...

Of course women can also get a bit competitive and last week's proffering from Maria for the Greek side was a mouthwatering dish of Bamies (okra, aka ladies fingers) bathed in tomato and olive oil salsa, followed the next day by Fotini's tasty Soupa Fakes (lentil soup) with onions and garlic.
Not to be outdone, these were swiftly countered by Stella's delicious Fassolatha (bean soup) to show the Brits could cook Greek too and Rachel's Anglo-Hellenic version of Bread and Butter Pudding combining Greek village bread with Gordon Ramsey's naughty tip of adding Baileys to the milk and eggs.
These all went down well but the self-appointed judges have announced they need to sample a few more dishes before they can decide on a winner...

The cuisine is expected to take a slightly Etruscan turn following Nathan's recent Italian Trip and his souvenir gifts of peculiar pastas and vintage Balsamic vinegar. More on the trip in the January newsletter with the launch of our new Tuscany programme (and perhaps by then, if we're lucky, Nathan may have remembered to take the goodies out of his car boot!!).

In the meantime, with Christmas round the corner, things are going to get interesting... Will the mince pies and Chrismas pud triumph over the Greek festive melamacarona (spicey syrup cakes) and kourabiedes (shortbread-style biscuits dipped in icing sugar)? The contest continues...

If you are spending part of your honeymoon on a yacht in the Ionian islands, the ports of Fiscardo and Aghia Efimia are ideal for those wanting to visit Kefalonia for a few nights to explore the interior of the island. Fiscardo is a sophisticated location for a honeymoon offering some luxurious suites with hydro-massage. Aghia Efimia's marina is less crowded for visiting yachts and offers some attractive apartments with lovely sea views.

Kefalonia Resorts

 - Agni Travel

FISCARDO

Although the 1953 earthquake destroyed much of the Ionian islands, on the northernmost tip of Kefalonia, the village of Fiscardo stayed almost intact. With foresight the island's governors issued strict building regulations to maintain the elegance of the Venetian architecture which lines Fiscardo's deep horseshoe harbour.

The Kefalonia Travel Guide has over a thousand pages of useful information on Kefalonia including a section on Resorts. This magazine on line can help you select the resort that is right for your holiday.
