Back to Top of Exploring By Motor Boat PageKEFALONIA MOTOR BOAT HIRE

Whether you want to explore the rock formations to seek out a sea cucumber or prefer some seriously sensuous sun-bathing on a secluded beach beyond access by car, a motor boat is the answer and, wherever you are staying on Kefalonia, there will be a boat for hire near you. These small fibreglass boats with an outboard engine costing from 50 to 80 Euro for one day￿s hire and, like hiring a car, you will pay extra for the petrol you use. Some boat operators let you take the boat out by the hour with the petrol included.
Having hired a boat for the day, you will probably find you want to extend the hire as it opens up possibilities of exploring uninhabited islets and seeing a coastal aspect, which is difficult to reach on foot. You can go for lunch at a quayside taverna or go shopping the leisurely way. In fact having your own boat can often be more useful than hiring a car.

The great thing is that no experience is necessary, as the local operator will show you how to operate the boat. Some of the boats have a tiller and these starting mechanisms need a tug on the cord to get the motor going. Actually operating the boat is easy ￿ but doing it with the air of confidence needs practice. For starters ￿ that cord needs a jolly good tug which is best done with both hands. With a graceful bend of the knees and a sharp yank on the rope, the motor should start. First time Captains should try not to throw their partner overboard with the backward thrust of the elbow or choose a model with an electric starter! More sophisticated boats have a steering wheel with an electric starter and consul (like a remote control).

Boats take from 2 to 6 people so it is worth thinking about what type of boat you are looking for before you go to the nearest supplier. A small boat for 2 to 4 people will usually be a 10-15 horsepower. Still for 2-4 people you can hire 25 and 30 horsepower boats, which are bigger and faster. For six people, take a 30 horse-power boat. Engines are 2-stroke or 4-stroke, the latter being more economical, ecological and quieter. Whichever boat you choose it will be sturdy and have enough power for gentle coastal meandering.

All the local boat operators are licensed by the Port Authority and are insured. However, the insurance will probably be third party and you will be liable for any damage to the boat and you will have to pay if any of the equipment is missing when you return to the harbour.
Boats are generally licensed as pleasure boats with fishing prohibited, but you can check this at the time of booking. You should also take heed of the time and place of return of the boat for safety reasons.
The equipment provided with each boat varies and is divided up into either 'essentials' or 'extras' that you may have to pay for:

Essentials
Life Jackets
Flares
Oars
Lamp
First Aid Kit
Anchor
Sun Canopy
Fire extinguisher
Instruction Leaflet

Rescue boat available

Extras
Mobile Telephone
Petrol
Fridge or Cool Box
Supply of Ice
Map
Chatting away to one of the locals the night before hiring your boat, he may suggest a perfect secluded beach to head for, which is easily accessible by motorboat, but could well be 5 miles away from your departure point. The Port Authority permits hired boats to travel within a range of three nautical miles from the point where they are hired. Your operator should give you a regional map with the limits clearly marked. If you travel out of this zone it will interfere with the insurance coverage and you may well be liable for a fine if one of the coast guards sees you. Bearing this in mind, before you set off for that deserted cove, you should check with the operator how many nautical miles away it is and decide if you want to take the risk.

You will soon get used to handling the boat, but anchoring will need some careful thought. It￿s not necessary to drag the boat up onto a beach or rocks, which will cause damage. The easiest way for a swim is to anchor in a bay where you stop the engine and drop the anchor making sure you are not close to any rocks and that the water is not too deep for the anchor to reach the bottom.
If you are planning to stay in a villa near the coast where a boat would be a practical enhancement, it may be advisable to pre-book the boat to avoid any disappointment.

Seagull Boats Kefalonia

Seagull Boats now offer motor-boat hire from Aghia Efimia Kefalonia (they have moved from Lassi Makris Yialos!)

There is a great selection of cruising options from Aghia Efimia. For seclusion it is best to cruise north and after about half a mile you will find some small pebbly beaches, which offer good snorkelling opportunities around the rocks. If you are lucky you will find a starfish and maybe see dolphins. It is very rare to site the monk seals, Monachus-Monachus that are in the sea caves in that area. There are about 20 secluded bays on the way to Fiscardo. You can cruise north for about an hour in one of the larger boats whereas the smaller boats take up to two hours.

Gorgota Bay is a favourite from Aghia Efimia ￿ it is advisable to go in the morning because in the early afternoon between 13.00 - 15.30, the wind can pick up from the north, causing the sea to become quite choppy.
Cruising south to Sami, there are some easily accessible beaches but they are not as secluded.

Yellow Boats

Aghia Efimia large jetty
Easy to spot, these boats are all yellow with a blue stripe.
Here you can rent a boat or dingy for the day or the Yellow Boat team offer to take you to a beach of your choice and bring you back at any time you wish. This is part of their water taxi service.
They have a range of boats from 15 to 30 hp.

Boats are supplied with life-jackets, flares, floating anchor and all necessities for an emergency including first-aid kit and mobile telephone.
You can chose if you want a canopy with the boat and they supply for the beach a portable fridge, thermos and beach parasol with base.
Full instructions are given at the time of taking the boat, which is supplied including insurance, and with an instruction manual on board.

Boulevard Boats

Boulevard Boats are at the small jetty in front of Hotel Boulevard in Aghia Efimia
Johnny, the owner, has 6 boats of 15 hp, 4.3 meters in length, which take 5 people
The person steering sits in the back and the boats operate with tiller (manual start with rope)
He has a two 25 and 30 hp boats, which are slightly bigger, 5 meters. These boats are the 'go faster' variety as they have more horsepower and take up to six persons. The person steering sits in the front or centre. Johnny has a wealth of information on places to visit and will even organise drinks and sandwiches to put in the fridge on-board.

Back to Top of Exploring By Motor Boat PageASSOS

Assos Rent-a-Boat is based at the Sea-Side cafe and snack bar, right on the harbour front at Assos and is run by Dimiris and Yiorgos. The boats are mainly 15hp and take up to 5 persons. They have an electric start mechanism with steering from the middle. Boats come supplied with canopy, mobile phone and standard safety equipment.
Assos Rent-a-Boat have a speedboat on standby in case anybody is late back or calls in with a problem and it will 'whiz' out to find you if you are not home on time. Motor boat cruising around Assos is great for finding small, secluded beaches which are inaccessible by car. Although Myrtos beach seems close on the map if is actually five or six nautical miles away from Assos harbour and is therefore off limits for small motor boats. You will get wonderful fish-eye views of the Venetian Castle as you meander along the rugged coastline of Assos. You would usually expect to pay for petrol on top of the boat hire, but in Assos it is included in the price of around 80 Euro a day.
The boats are not equipped with a fridge or cool box but Dimitri can supply food and drink for the boat from the Sea Side snack bar on request. So if you are staying in Assos and have access to a fridge, the best advice is to freeze some small bottles of water overnight and make your own cool box and to guarantee cool water to drink. Boats must be returned by 6p.m.

SKALA
DOLPHIN Ski Club has speed-boats for hire, not motor-cruisers. The nearest motor boat suppliers to this resort will be found in Katelios or Poros. Speed Boats for 2 persons can be hired for the day.
Their new Honda boats have engines with 15 hp and 30 hp, electric start and steering. Insurance is included. Sunshade, ladder and all rescue equipment supplied. Full tuition is given by Makis, the owner.

Back to Top of Exploring By Motor Boat PageKATELIOS

Sea Breeze Boat Rental

These are found at Katelios Harbour, just past the kiosk.
Yiannis Constantatos has four different types of boats on hire. A small boat of 10 to 15 hp is suitable for 2 to 4 people. There is the 25 hp model for two to four people. There are two boats with 30 hp, one for two to four persons and the larger, which takes six people.
Yiannis gives operational and safety lessons. Boats come with a canopy, fire extinguisher, life-jackets and flares. There are small cupboards to store your snacks and although there is no fridge on board, he can arrange for a box with ice to be provided. Mobile telephones are also supplied. Boats can go out from 08.30 and have to be back by 16.00.

Yiannis' suggested itineraries include from Katelios west to Lourdas and Trapezaki, but some of the more secluded beaches en route are probably better for first-timers, being nearer and more secluded. Cruising eastwards from Katelios towards Skala, takes you past Kaminia and around Cape Mounda where there are some lovely sandy beaches to be found.
