Mount Kalon Oros in the Pylaros regions of Kefalonia has been declared a Natura Site (code GR220001) in the European Union's NATURA 2000 Network of Protected Areas. This is an initiative which aims to conserve biodiversity through sustainable use and monitoring.
The area of 2566 hectares is considered a significant ecosystem due to the rare Mediterranean macchia that thrives here. The most prolific varieties include oaks, arbutus, and lentisk shrubs. Some areas are covered by a vividly red peony subspecies adn there are entire fields of different orchid varieties as well as a wide assortment of wildflowers.
Stock breeding activities thrived on Mount Kalon Oros in previous centuries and the numerous 'beehive' stone huts provide a reminder of that era.
The presence of so many natural treasures in Pylaros has brought about much discussion and concern with environmental protection issues. This sensitivity to the preservation of natural resources has resulted in action.
The Aeolian power parks established on Mt. Aghia Dynati and Imerovigli (on the border of Pylaros with the Municipality of Argostoli), are an integral part of the campaign for the generation and use of alternative energy sources.
The Volunteer Team for the Environmental Protection of Pylaros, besides being very active in forest fire protection during the summer months, contributes substantially to activities such as tree planting and the clean-up of shores and public spaces. <
