Katavothres, is 3 kilometres outside Argostoli along the Fanari road and the name, meaning swallow holes, describes the beginning of a peculiar geological phenomenon.
Sea water flows into sink holes and disappears. Back in 1963 there was an investigation by Austrian geomorphologists using purple dye in the water to find that it travelled through underground rivers, mixing with rain water and ending up in Melissani Lake 15 kilometres away.

The water then rushes into the sea at the nearby village of Karavomilos, taking two weeks to make the journey across the island. The experiment was verified by using radioisotopes.
At Karavomilos you will find a pretty setting with a duck pond, surrounding eucalyptus and pine trees with views across to Ithaca and a strip of shingle beach.
