The island attracts holiday yachting flotillas to the delightful bays of Balou, Ampelakia, Atherinos and Vathi. Wooded hillsides enclose sandy bays offering wonderful anchorages and secluded swimming. The island is small and beautifully unspoilt. You can visit Meganisi as part of a day cruise aboard a motor-cruiser from Kefalonia, departing from Aghia Efimia and from Fiscardo, as well as from Lefkas. The cruises go into the bay of Spilia with the village of Spartohori above. On disembarking from the boat, a short walk up a very steep hill will bring you to the village of Spartohori with an excellent viewing platform on top. From here there is a magnificent vista taking in the islands of Skorpios, Madouri and other smaller ones, with the island of Lefkas in the distance. The island is not very suitable for cars as the villages of Spartohori and Katomeri, the only two villages on Meganisi are a maze of narrow lanes which are better negotiated by donkey or moped. Meganisi is a great island to explore on foot following the goat tracks down to secluded beaches. There is a hotel in Katomeri and some village rooms available for anyone who wishes to get away from it all or who relaxes so much on their day trip they miss the cruise boat home!
