You could also consider finding flights to Crete via Athens. This is sometimes the only option if you wish to visit Crete before the start of the summer season.
There are two airlines that fly from Athens to Crete.
Olympic Airlines and Aegean Airlines
El. Venizelos Athens Airport is a very well organized international airport, which can make the time spent between flights an enjoyable and interesting one. (The code for Athens airport is ATH)

Easyjet have flights to Heraklion from London Gatwick, Manchester and Bristol airports. New for 2010 easyjet will be adding Chania to the flight schedule with flights on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Sundays from London Gatwick.
