The area of Castro, 11 km southern from Otranto, is divided into an upper part (town) and a lower part by the sea (marina) and has been inhabited since the prehistoric era.
Nowadays the lovely tourist resort of Castro Marina is one of the prettiest and most popular of all Salento peninsula. Lovely restaurants, fresh fish and great food are accompanied by small rocky caves and pebbly beaches, castles and scenic buildings. Castro Marina is also an ideal point to start interesting organized boat trips and excursions.
Just a few km from Castro Marina Zinzulusa's Caves are a must not to be missed. These caves by the sea, accessed through a coastal path from which some of the clearest waters all over the world can be seen, are famous for their particular natural environment, that give a house to several (protected) prehistorical shrimps that remained hidden during the centuries in the most remote areas of the caves and preserved their ancient characteristic as they never had any contacts with the world outside.
Just outside the caves a bar, restaurant and a pool by the sea can be found for some relaxation during the hottest days of the summer.
