Why Choose a Holiday on Zakynthos?

Why Choose a Holiday on Zakynthos?, Zakynthos, Guides, Agni Travel

Zakynthos is the island for those who love beaches. The coastline offers beautiful sandy beaches, sheltered coves and dramatic cliffs to the North. Head inland though, through olive groves and valleys clad in pine forests, and you will discover fascinating Greek villages where time has stood still.

Getting to Zakynthos

Zakynthos has its own international airport located 6km south of Zakynthos town. Daily ferries run from Italy and there are regular ferries to Killini on mainland Greece. There is also a ferry to Kefalonia.

Car Hire and Taxi Transfer

Agni Travel can arrange a hire car (or taxi transfer) to be waiting for you at the airport.

Caretta Caretta Turtles

The highlight of a visit to Zakynthos has to be the witnessing of a newly hatched Turtle making its way down the sandy beach to be carried away by the first wave. These sandy breeding grounds are fiercely protected and the turtle 'nests' clearly marked.

Zakynthos (also known as Zante) is the most southerly of the Ionian islands which are located off the Western coast of mainland Greece.

Zakynthos or Zante?

Zakynthos is the Greek name for the island. Whereas the Italians called it Zante (during the Italian rule) and this name is still commonly used by visiting tourists.

Beaches on Zakynthos

A selection of our favourite beaches include:

Gerakas

An outstanding sandy bay, protected by sandstone cliffs. Gerakas is one of the main Turtle breeding grounds so please observe the signs and turtle nest sites.

Keri

Keri is also known as Limni Keri, a name which comes from the lake which used to exist there. The beach is pebbles and sand but the warm and shallow waters make it perfect for families. There is also a small river which runs into the sea. From Limni Keri you can also take a small boat over to the nearby (deserted) island of Marathonisi.

Marathonisi

Marathonisi is a small island just 2km from the beach of Limni Keri. The long sand bank on the island is a setting similar to a Caribbean beach with fine white sands and turquoise waters! On the other side of the island is a smaller beach with white, sunbleached pebbles - perfect for snorkeling. There are also two interesting sea-caves, where you can swim to or visit by boat. Regular boat-taxis depart from Limni Keri or you can rent your own.
